Climate Literacy for Mothers

Empowering mothers to take well-informed steps on their climate action journey

Mothers often have a deep emotional connection to the well-being of future generations. This emotional connection can be harnessed to foster a stronger sense of urgency and commitment towards climate action.

In Indonesia, networks of mothers provide an opportunity to democratize the issue of climate change and climate action on a personal and family level. Successful cases show that mothers can also lead by example, adopting sustainable lifestyles and inspiring others to follow suit. Engaging with mothers is impactful, but also helps elevate a group that is often sidelined in national political and economic decision making.

Since 2023, BBB has started to see the issue of climate change and energy transition as a topic that should be mainstreamed among mothers to ensure that the progress can be driven by this group and that the policy direction caters to the needs of different communities represented by this group of mothers.

The core idea of this initiative is to combine offline/online activities with the existing literacy campaign activities which are the bread and butter of BBB.

We hope more mothers are engaged in climate action and their perspective, concerns, and ideas are included in any systemic change.

Climate Literacy Module for Mothers
buibubijak.id

One part of the Climate Literacy for Mothers program is the Buibu Bijak module, a collaboration between Buibu Baca Buku and Think Policy. Buibu Bijak is a Climate Literacy Module for Mothers that invites mothers to understand the climate crisis issue from issues that are closer to them: children’s growth and health, children’s future and jobs, waste and home environment, pollution, better electricity, and low-emission everyday action.

This module includes facts, basic knowledge, inspiration for action, and a glossary. Buibu Bijak content also collaborated with organizations that have been actively advocating for systemic changes in social, climate, and energy issues, such as Bicara Udara, CISDI, Coaction Indonesia, IESR, and Zero Waste Indonesia. We believe that the Buibu Bijak module can be the first step of the journey for mothers to learn more about the aforementioned issues.
